2010 Race Calendar

During the 2009 season I thought it would be a great idea to create a race schedule in Google Calendar featuring different racing series. I was busy with accounts studies at the time and I never got around to taking it further. Early last month I decided it was worth exploring so I set up a trial with F1 and IndyCar dates. I'd add more later if I decided it looked okay. Again I let it drop when other things got in the way.

Christine from Sidepodcast recently created a calendar highlighting F1 events and the SPC / F1 Minute podcast schedules and she did a great job, enough to inspire me to get on and finish my idea.

Here it is!

My schedule includes F1, F2, GP2, IndyCar, Le Mans 24hr, ALMS, LMS, MotoGP, WRC, IRC and WTCC. I've also put in Dakar, Goodwood and a couple of other things. I'll add NASCAR Sprint Cup and DTM soon - there are categories already so if you add them the events will hopefully appear in your calendar automatically.

Christine's calendar is F1-specific and it includes Free Practice, pre-season testing and car launches. My calendar includes none of these things, only qualifying and race. I highly recommend adding Christine's F1 calendar if you would like this extra information.

Click the "+GoogleCalendar" button to add to your own Google Calendar account. I have split events by race series so you can just pick the ones you want. I think there is a way to get them into iCal and other systems, though I don't know how.

The calendar is set to UK time because that's where I am and that's most useful to me. I'm not sure but I believe when you import it, it will adjust it to your own default timezone. Have a play with it and see.

Race start times are estimates apart from F1 and Le Mans. This information is surprisingly hard to find. E.g. IndyCar.com only lists TV start times, not race starts. Many sites only give the dates and I've had to improvise. Then there's the issue of timezones which I may have got wrong. I plan to make each forthcoming weekend as accurate as I can, beyond that just use this as a guide.

I've included qualifying for F1, Le Mans 24Hrs and IndyCar (times estimated). I don't intend to include any more qualifying.

I hope you find this useful and please let me know if there is anything you would like to add. If the demand is there and I think it warrants adding, I'll do so. I'm already considering Indy Lights.

As you can see I've also added a list version to the sidebar. When I create the new site I will have a version similar to the one above on its own page.

IZOD IndyCar Series

Congratulations to the Indy Racing League for securing a new sponsor for the IndyCar Series, which will henceforth be known as the IZOD IndyCar Series.

From all reports IZOD sound like a fantastic partner to work with, and not just reports from yesterday's announcement but also from during this season where they were a personal sponsor for Ryan Hunter-Reay. I like the attitude and marketing style they appear to bring to the series. I say 'appear' because living here in the UK I had never heard of them before they came to the IRL.

The announcement was webcast live last night, unfortunately the usual gremlins crept in and the feed was very quiet at first, then lost sound before dying completely. This is not unusual for IndyCar.com live streams, either pressers or races, and Allen makes a fantastic suggestion on how to fix it - the IRL team have some really good ideas but their tech and implementation don't seem to ever catch up, so imagine mixing those two groups of people.

So yeah, good news for the series which is finally starting to heal some of the old wounds of the past. First the reunion, now the sponsor, next.. the car?

Some have attempted to spin this as Tony George doing good. Ha. No. He is the cause of the mess we are only just crawling out of. We haven't quite got to the 'standing up and dusting ourselves down' bit yet, but we will.

Anyway, good to have some positive news after what has been a bit of a negative week for the rest of motorsport.

Presumably this means the series acronym will now be IICS - for those not following closely, i.e. most reading this I presume, over the last 18 months or so they've been redefining 'IRL' to refer to the sanctioning body rather than the championship, so the series has sort of started to be called the ICS, for IndyCar Series. So we now have IRL IICS. Not catchy.. needs work.

Jeff Olson has a good piece over on AUTOSPORT.

EDIT - IndyCar.com has a nice landing page explaining it all, though unfortunately the main site underneath is still a mess and has auto-run video (it is video of the announcement though, so check it out).

Weekend Preview: 8-9 August 2009

Feature Events

IRL IndyCar Series

- Honda Indy 200
- Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
- Lexington, Ohio, USA
- (13/17)

Mid-Ohio is a nice place and I'm sure it is a fantastic place to drive a racing car - it certainly looks it - unfortunately I find the 'racing' to be processional, this is a strategy event. The place is too narrow and too bumpy. There is one passing opportunity, the do-or-die at the end of the long straight, if it works you look a hero but if it fails... into the kitty litter and an almost-certain safety car. There have been some very good moves at that corner but it really is a "send it up the inside and hope it works" type of place, rather than somewhere to set up a move.

I remember it said in my short CART-watching stint 8 or so years ago that it needed widening and nothing has changed. They should widen only some of it though! The back section is a good test of driving skill and is the best feature of the course, keep that as it is. For all it's faults it is really good to see IndyCars away from street racing and on natural terrain courses - it needs more open road courses and fewer streets, IMO.

TV Guide:
UK – TAPE DELAY on Sky Sports Xtra at 10.30pm BST Sunday

USA – LIVE on VERSUS at 1pm ET Sunday

The tape delay is due to live NASCAR at the same time and Sky Sports are showing golf, tennis and cricket on the other three channels (perhaps ironically, the golf is also from Ohio).

Other Events

American Le Mans Series

- Acura Sports Car Challenge
- Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
- Lexington, Ohio, USA
- (6/10)

Thankfully the racing in the ALMS at Mid-Ohio can be better than the IRL, and that is because of the traffic of the different classes. Unfortunately I am not able to make this a 'Feature Event' until live coverage returns - and that applies both here in the UK where several races have been aired a week late, but also in the USA where this event is delayed one day. I'm not saying I'd be able to see it but as far as I'm concerned, not offering even a same-day tape is unforgivable.

TV Guide:
The race starts at 3pm EDT Saturday and you can follow it at their website and Radio Le Mans.
UK - TAPE DELAY on MotorsTV at 5pm Sunday 16th
USA - TAPE DELAY on NBC at 2.30pm Sunday 9th

Also at Mid-Ohio:
Indy Lights

NASCAR Sprint Cup

- Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen
- Watkins Glen International, New York, USA
- www.nascar.com

TV Guide:
UK – LIVE on Sky Sports Xtra at 7pm Sunday
US - LIVE on ESPN at 1pm Sunday

NASCAR on the road course will be frenetic. They are on a version of the course which is a bit shorter than the one used by IndyCar a few weeks ago. I think that's all there is to say there, other than the name of this race is genuine, this isn't a parody!

NASCAR Nationwide Series

- Zippo 200
- Watkins Glen International, New York, USA
- www.nascar.com

I didn't realise Nationwide was a support to the main series on the roads..

Grand-Am Rolex Series

- Crown Royal 200 at the Glen
- Watkins Glen International, New York, USA
- www.grandamerican.com

Formula Nippon

- Twin-Ring Motegi

For motorbike fans, I don't usually note anything other than MotoGP but FYI the British Superbikes are at Brands Hatch this weekend. Otherwise it seems most European-based series are on a break for this weekend, meaning a very US-dominated schedule for this weekend. Nothing wrong with that - if only we could see it live!

Feature Events

IRL IndyCar Series

- Meijer Indy 300
- Kentucky Speedway
- Sparta, Kentucky, United States
- (12/17)

Changes to the aero rules for this race (see previous post) should mean an improvement in the racing on this 1.5 mile oval, as it has been fairly bad on ovals earlier this season. Since side by side open-wheel racing on ovals is the hallmark and unique selling point of this series, let's hope they work.

Note this is a Saturday night race under the lights.

A Push To Pass

As reported in several places, the IndyCar Series will adopt a 'Push to Pass' system this weekend and for the remainder of the year. This system will provide a horsepower boost for a duration of 12 seconds per button-press. The amount of extra hp will depend on the fuel mixture setting selected (there are several preselected settings from full rich all the way to full lean, to save fuel, and a yellow flag setting). A fully rich setting will gain just 5hp while a leaner setting will benefit from up to 20hp.

These are not big gains. The Senior Technical Director of the IRL said the small amounts were due to the fact these are normally-aspirated engines which are already near their full potential, unlike Champ Car turbos which only needed a boost level change to get big hp gains. Perhaps he's inferring that the A1GP engines are somewhat detuned under normal conditions, considering they get a rather larger bump from their normally-aspirated P2P...

What is very interesting about this development is that it is being introduced on an oval. No variant of P2P has ever been used on an oval, to the best of my knowledge, since Champ Car had stopped racing on them by the time their system was implemented. On an oval the horsepower and car setup are everything. Perhaps even just this small difference will be enough to create close racing? Maybe less so on the shorter tracks, but at those where their foot is on the bulkhead all the way round, definitely.

I am much more sceptical on the road and street courses where I really don't think it'll make an ounce of difference, the jump in power just isn't enough for those tracks.

What is interesting is a tweet from Allen from The Furious Wedge. He mentioned another change that has been lost among the hoopla about P2P - the removal of the 'wicker bill' from the rear wing (as well as the general freeing-up of the aero regs). The wicker bill is a part on the trailing edge of the rear wing which creates drag. I'm not entirely sure why they are there, perhaps in a previous evolution of the aero package they helped the racing but it seems the reverse is true now, for whatever reason.

Let's hope these changes improve the racing which has reportedly been dire this season. I've not really been able to see much of this year but I have recordings which I will watch over the coming weeks.

Weekend Preview: 25-26 July 2009

Feature Events

FIA Formula 1 World Championship

- Formula 1 ING Magyar Nagydig
- (ING Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix)
- Hungaroring, nr.Budapest, Hungary
- (10/17)

F1 returns to the dustbowl of the Hungaroring, where as usual the forecast is for high temperatures. The dust of the surrounding area has a tendency to get all over the track and make grip very hard to come by, it is this in combination with the circuit layout itself that tends to prevent good racing at this notoriously boring race track - though the changes to turn one a few years ago have created a divebomb-braking opportunity for the brave/crazy (if not in the F1 race, definitely in the GP2 support races!).

I am not a fan of this event although it did bring F1 to Eastern Europe as long ago as the mid-1980s, and track improvements over the last two decades have improved racing.. a bit..

TV Guide:
UK – LIVE on BBC One at 12.10pm Sunday, race starts at 1pm
(qualifying on BBC Two at 12.10pm Sat)
USA – HEAVILY DELAYED on FOX at 3pm ET.

IRL IndyCar Series

- Rexall Edmonton Indy
- City Centre Airport, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
- (11/17)

This is the second visit to Edmonton for the IndyCars but the 5th (I think?) running of the event, with this being a former Champ Car venue - but any advantage the CC guys had has now been erased and there should be a nice level playing field, apart from the actual track surface of this bumpy airport circuit!

Of note this year is the first visit to the circuit of the supporting Indy Lights series.

TV Guide:
UK – LIVE on Sky Sports 2 at 10.45pm Sunday (directly after NASCAR)

USA – LIVE on VERSUS at 5pm ET Sunday

FIM MotoGP

- British Grand Prix
- Donington Park, Castle Donington, England
- (11/17)

The final visit to Donington for the premier motorbike series, for now at least, as it moves in the opposite direction to F1 and will pitch up at Silverstone in 2010, with apparent mixed feelings from the riders. Some love Donny, some can't wait to leave. I think it makes a great motorbike track with the sweeping curves.

Living in the UK I know the forecast for the weekend. Saturday is due to be warm and sunny so qualifying should be representative - but rain is due to appear for the race on Sunday.

(I can never remember if DP is in Northants or Lincs)

TV Guide:
UK – LIVE on BBC ONE at 3pm Sunday (directly after F1), race start 3.30pm

USA – SPEED claims 6pm ET, which is not possible because the race starts at 8.30pm ET.

TMR on Planet IRL podcast!

Kohl from PlanetIRL has a new podcast and was gracious enough to ask me to appear on his first show. I was glad to agree even though I was mortified at actually talking out loud! What might I say?

Find out here!

Show Details

Host: Kohl Kirkland

F1 Segment
- Dex Brennan, from Midweek Motorsport and www.radiolemans.com
- Me!

IRL Segment
- Existing PlanetIRL co-writer Lisa Kenny.
- New PlanetIRL co-writer Paul Dalbey, also of http://greatestspectacleinracing.blogspot.com/

Special Guest
- Daniel Herrington, currently running inside the top ten in the Indy Lights points standings

Head over to the PlanetIRL to download the show!

I let the side down a little by saying "umm", leaving gaps and generally being a bit quiet, but that's me generally anyway - for a quiet guy I didn't do too badly, particularly when paired with experienced motormouth Dex! He was a legend stepping in at the last minute when the booked guest found himself stuck at work.

What have I learned? If I ever go on a podcast again I'll be sure to prepare notes first and cut down on the nervous laughing! I very much enjoyed it though, and I hope the podcast is a success.

Weekend Preview: 11-12 July 2009

Feature Events

FIA Formula 1 World Championship

- Grosser Preis Santander von Deutschland (Santander German GP)
- Nürburgring, Germany
- (9/17)

We have passed the halfway point of the season and it is time to pay a visit to the Eifel region of Germany and the Nürburgring, which hasn’t seen a Formula 1 race since that wet event of 2007 – after that race the circuit entered into a ‘sharing’ agreement with the Hockenheimring.

Previously both circuits held races in the same season, Hockenheim would take the German GP and Nürburg would take the European GP. This changes when Valencia took the latter title and simultaneously both German tracks realised they were losing a fortune paying Bernie’s fees. This explains why this is only the second German Grand Prix to be held on this iteration of a track called Nürburgring (of course, the old circuit held the German GP for years, as the Eifelrennen).

This track should suit the Brawns more than Silverstone, and should in theory work against Red Bull – but this was before RBR’s pre-Silverstone upgrade, how will that affect them?

Overtaking spots
The first corner is notable for being almost a dead stop (the start will be fun!) and is a good place to try a pass. The other major spot is the chicane at the end of the lap which follows a fast, long run up the hill.

TV Guide:
UK – LIVE on BBC One at 12.10pm Sunday, race starts at 1pm
(qualifying at 12:10pm Saturday)
USA – Delayed? on FOX but I can’t find when

IRL IndyCar Series

- Honda Indy Toronto
- Exhibition Place, Toronto, Canada
- (10/17)

The return of the streets of Toronto to North American after a one year absence due to the series ‘merger’, although the official website incorrectly and very frustratingly refers to this as the ‘inaugural event’, thus completely ignoring the last 23 years (it has been running since 1986). Wasn’t this supposed to be a MERGER??

Still, nice to have it back.

Elsewhere in sport don’t forget to keep up with le Tour de France which in the UK can be found nightly at 7pm on ITV4 for the next 2 1/2 weeks. I believe there are copious amounts of coverage on Eurosport too. In the US you can see it on Versus, which curiously also takes Phil Liggett’s commentary (I’m guessing he records links for each network every day because he talks about ITV4 by name on our coverage).

I plan to complete the Goodwood posts during this weekend, then next week will catch up with some race notes because I haven’t done Turkey or Britain yet!
Hopefully soon I will be able to find time to start watching all the other stuff I like to keep up with, which I had to put on hold during my college studies. I am a very long way behind.

The whole idea is a bunch of hokum clearly, but it features interesting if unspectacular drivers such as Enrique Bernoldi, Giorgio Pantano, Antonio Pizzonia, Yelmer Buurman, Adrian Valles, Tristan Gommendy and Ho-Pin Tung, all in powerful V12 single-seaters.

(also on the bill: Euroseries 3000, this is the series which picked up the old Lola A1 cars, no telly coverage as far as I know)

Weekend Preview: 20-21 June 2009

Feature Events

FIA Formula 1 World Championship

- Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix
- Silverstone, Northamptonshire, England, UK
- (9/17)
- 60 laps
- www.f1.com

The final FIA Formula 1 British GP to be held at Silverstone, for the foreseeable future at least, as in 2010 this event is scheduled to move to Donington Park. Irrespective of how Donington will turn out, it will be a shame to leave Silverstone. The facilities for the crowd, the teams and the sponsors are not brilliant yet the actual racetrack is one of the best in the world. I absolutely love that camera position on the fence on the entry to Maggotts/Becketts, you really get a sense of the speed and the rapid direction change of these cars.

Quite what the motorsport landscape will look like by June 2010 is anybody’s guess – which teams will arrive at Donington? Will the circuit even be ready? Will FOTA organise their own British GP, held at Silverstone?

All this is for the future.

For now though, let us focus on this race meeting. We can reasonably expect the Brawns to be strong and today’s times from Free Practice suggest the recent Red Bull updates have strengthened that team. We could be in for a very competitive race!

While this is a home race for Jenson Button, it has historically been one of Rubens Barrichello’s stronger circuits, expect him to come into play here. As for the other teams.. forget it, they are scrapping for minor points.

TV Guide:
UK - LIVE on BBC One at 12.10pm BST (race start 1pm)
, followed by the F1 Forum on the red button service
USA – DELAYED on FOX at 3pm ET (I’m not sure how much pre-race they’ll have, if none that’s still a SEVEN HOUR tape delay *shocked*)

Support races: GP2 Series, FBMW Europe, Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, Historic Sportscars

BEFORE THE RACE at about 11am UK be sure to head to www.sidepodcast.com and join the live Parade Lap! It is an online radio show loosely discussing F1 with a laid-back Sunday vibe. It will end as the BBC coverage begins and there is live text commenting! Stick around on the site to live comment the race.

I intend to both live comment the race on SPC, and live tweet on Twitter. If you follow my Twitter account and are located in the US (or elsewhere) and do not wish the result to be spoiled, you should avoid Twitter completely or un-follow me until you have seen the race. Sorry, the live audience isn’t going to wait for you!

Iowa is a small oval but it is designed in such a way that the racing and the speeds are as they would be on a superspeedway. Craziness ensues! They haven’t been coming here long but it is turning into a must-see event, unfortunately year 1 was for all the wrong reasons will lots of crashes. Year 2 was much better with close racing everywhere. What will this year bring?

Feature Events

Formula 1

- Formula 1 ING Turkish Grand Prix
- Istanbul Park, Turkey
- (7/17)
- 58 laps
- www.f1.com

The Turkish GP is held at another Tilkedrome out in the middle of nowhere, miles away from the city it purports to represent. All the team personnel, media, etc. complain that it takes 1.5 hours to travel to/from the circuit from Istanbul, and that’s on a good run from the ‘near’ side of the city.

The problem in Turkey is the same as at a lot of other ‘new’ venues – lack of attendance. The prices are too high for the locals, or the locals are not sufficiently interested, or they like dressing up to look like grandstand seats.

That said it is one of the more interesting Tilke circuits, particularly the high-speed high-load multi-apex Turn 8, which creates a passing opportunity into the Turn 9 chicane, which in turn leads on to the back straight and another passing opportunity. The cars can race at this circuit.

The classic time trials are running over the whole week, up to next Saturday. These guys are utterly insane! I will post an ‘On The Limit’ video tomorrow, when I’ve found one, in the meantime check YouTube yourself.
ITV4 has been running nightly updates at 9pm and will continue to do so throughout the week, and ITV1 will have highlights on Sunday 7th and Sunday 14th.

* * *
This is actually a fairly quiet weekend when you think about it, in Europe all the other series try to schedule races for when F1 isn’t on so that has a big effect. Let me know if I’ve missed anything.

I will try to find time for a Le Mans preview during the week, possibly Thursday when qualifying is on and when things aren’t so hectic for me. Of course since you’ll all be listening to www.radiolemans.com and will have downloaded their preview podcasts, you’ll know all there is to know already!

IRL Preview: 2009 Indianapolis 500

IRL IndyCar Series
- 93rd Indianapolis 500 Mile Race (4/17)
- Indianapolis Motor Speedway
- Speedway, Indiana, Indianapolis, United States
- 200 laps
- www.indycar.com and www.indy500.com (check both)

Event History
The second of the two great events occurring today, though perhaps only in terms of scheduling. I’ll leave the Monaco vs Indy debate for others and of course readers of this blog must surely agree the N-Word thing happening later isn’t even in the reckoning.

The 500 is one of the longest-standing events in the world if not the longest, it having started way back in 1911. As you can imagine, there is a lot of history and tradition here, right from retaining the yard of bricks at the line, to releasing the balloons before race start, to the three-wide start.

There have also been some very tight finishes!

1992:

2006:

Circuit
On the face of it the track is just a couple of very long straights connected by 90-degree corners, like a rounded rectangle, and while this is somewhat true it very much hides some interesting nuances.

- The banking isn’t very steep for an oval, especially not an oval of this speed, so it requires some balls-out commitment to head into turn one when all you see in front of you is a concrete wall. It is a little bit better now they have the SAFER barrier – but you still don’t want to hit it.

- Unlike many ovals, each turn is unique and has its own characteristics. Dan Wheldon in this week’s Autosport magazine says turns 1 and 2 are tricky and often have crosswinds, while 3 and 4 are easier and allow you to set up a run on someone along the main straight.

The bigger issues at Indy are the traffic, the fuel mileage and the other drivers!

Check out this video of Helio Castroneves on a restart two years ago, if you’ve never seen this you won’t believe how close he gets to the pit retaining wall, and neither did he…

Form
The Penske and Ganassi teams are largely unbeatable on the ovals, yet Indy is the place the smaller teams hope to score an upset because anything can happen. You’ve got to say it is between Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon though, and anyone else is an outside bet!

What to Watch For
- The warm-up lap. Seriously! This is the only oval race I feel the pre-start tension in the same way I do with F1, and it really kicks in on the final warm-up lap as the cars come off of turn 2 and form up in the classic 3x3 formation, which they hold until turn 4. Goosebumps.
- A fast and furious opening section, a long middle section, and a fast and furious closing section.

UK TV

R: Sky Sports 3 and Sky Sports 3 HD will air the Race live at 6pm

US TV

R: As usual, ABC (in HD) will air the Race live at Midday.
US viewers should remember to switch to Versus when the ABC coverage is over for an extended post-race show!

Enjoy the race!

The teams have their luxurious motorhomes (palaces?) back, races are at their usual times again, and people actually will actually be on site watching with their eyes - Formula 1 is back in Europe!

Questions to be asked this weekend:

Which teams will choose to run KERS this week? Which teams will have added a new diffuser? Will the crazy-looking wings actually generate passing at what is usually one of the most boring races of the year? This place will be a true test of the new regulations.
Find out on Sunday!

Other Events

IRL IndyCar Series

- Pole Day for the Indy 500
- Indianapolis Motor Speedway
- Speedway, Indiana, USA
- www.indycar.com

Indy’s long qualifying process starts with the big one, qualifying for the top 11 spots including the pole position! The draw for the qualifying order takes place on Friday night with the first car in line due to start the four-lap average from 12pm ET (I believe?).

After the 11th run the ‘bumping’ begins – the field is limited to 11 positions and the slowest gets knocked out on each faster run.

Repeat for positions 12-22 on Sunday and positions 23-33 next Saturday. Yes, this means if you are quick Sunday but not Saturday you might qualify in 12th with a faster time than the guy in 11th…

Finally, next Sunday is the last chance qualifying of Bump Day when whole field is opened up again and the slowest car regardless of position is bumped off the list.

There is copious TV coverage in the US but I’d imagine this one is best followed online using the radio, live timing and all of your Twitter friends!

TV Guide:

US – Versus has a huge level of coverage from 12:00pm to 6:30pm EDT on Saturday and Sunday with the same again for next week’s sessions.

GP2 Series

- Circuit de Catalunya
- Montmelo, Catalonia, Spain
- (1/10)

F1’s feeder series proper gets going after the diversion of the Asia Series. I have to say I need to do some reading up on who is doing what, and which drivers have been promoted from junior categories, because I’m a little bit behind on my GP2 news! Should be fun though.

TV Guide:

UK – Feature race doesn’t seem to be live on Saturday at all, we have to wait until 8am Sunday to watch it on Setanta Sports 1 followed directly by live coverage of the Sprint race.

This is a major step down in coverage compared to what we have been used to – we have had live coverage of the this or its predecessor F3000 for well over a decade, perhaps nearer two decades. This is not good news.

World Superbikes
- Monza, Italy

Don’t follow it so I don’t know…

Please note there will be no dedicated F1 Preview for the Spanish Grand Prix as regrettably I do not have time to write one. I have a lot of exam and project work to do so the blog will remain quiet for the next couple of weeks – but I will still be updating my Twitter account!

The taxicabs are on the high banks at Talledega for a long restrictor plate race. What's the 499 about? It can't be the mileage because I can't make the numbers work. It's a 2.66 mile track. Anyway, restrictor plate tracks are boring, everyone is just waiting for the inevitible huge accident and that's not fun.

Event History
Going to be honest, I have no idea.

Circuit
It's a 1.5 mile oval and it should be highly entertaining. The IRL visits a lot of 1.5 mile ovals - remember when American Open Wheel featured the long superspeedways and the short low-banked one milers? What happened to that?

I can't find a decent YouTube or DailyMotion vid of the track action other than some practice shots of lone cars, which is a bit lame really. Ovals are only exciting when there is more than one car on it.
EDIT - SandWedge pointed out this excellent vid from 2003 which I somehow missed, thanks!

Form
First oval of the year so nobody knows! Will the former 'transition' teams be up to speed in the race? It looks like it because the front row is made up of Rahal and Doornbos! How will Robert cope with starting his first oval race up front?

IndyCar Preview - Long Beach 2009

IRL IndyCar Series
- Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach (2/17)
- Long Beach, California, United States
- 85 laps
- www.indycar.com
- Track Map (PDF)

Event History
The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach is one of the classic events in all of racing, starting out as a Formula 5000 test event before hosting Formula 1 for eight years. With Bernie's ever increasing fees - and this was in the early '80s! - the race organisers decided to switch to the nascent CART series which had recently split away from USAC. There was something of a drop-off in popularity for a short while before Long Beach found itself as one of the crown jewels of American motorsport and a level of prestige within Indycar racing second only to Indianapolis itself, with massive crowds and a party atmosphere.

This continued for many successful years until the damage from 'The Split' eventually found its way even to this event with the fall of CART. The re-formed Champ Car and the Long Beach GP stuck together until the death of Champ Car over the winter of 2007/08, and it was entirely fitting that the final send-off of the CART/Champ Car era was held at Long Beach one year ago, shortly following the unification announcement.

To the present then, and the IndyCar Series takes on the mantle of racing around these prestigious streets as the headline act and ensuring a long future for the Grand Prix of Long Beach. Toyota continues its long tradition as title sponsor (and the sponsor of the Pro/Celebrity race), and for the 3rd year running the ALMS is on the card and will be racing on the Saturday evening. The beginning of the IRL era at Long Beach also brings the Indy Lights to the streets for the first time in that series' current incarnation.

Circuit
Long Beach is the all time classic American street race circuit, the one format all other US street tracks follow, and yet due to developments it has changed many times over the years.
The current lap begins with a long flat-out blast along Shoreline Drive, which is a dual-carriageway with the pitlane taking up the other side of the road. The cars then take a 90-degree left turn, one of the best passing places on the circuit, before passing the fountain and working back in a short loop to very briefly rejoin Shoreline Drive again. From here there is a 90-left into a short downhill section and then into the long back straight under the bridges. After that is the slippery run through to the hairpin, and back on to Shoreline Drive.

Here is Justin Wilson describing a lap of the track in 2007:

I'm not sure why he wasn't flat out along the backstraight, it could be the audio was out of sync.

This track is one of the first I ever saw in American racing, late one night here in the UK, and is one of the reasons I fell in love with it.

Form
Justin Wilson always runs extremely well at Long Beach and given his performance at St Pete you have to think he's looking very strong despite being with an unfancied team. Other ex-CCWS teams/drivers ought to fare well too including Will Power, and Ryan Briscoe knows the place well from his ALMS runs, but we'll see if Helio Castroneves' return will be disruptive to Penske's efforts as they are said to be running 3 cars.
You can't rule out the Ganassi team despite neither driver nor the team having run here for several years, the same is true of the likes of Kanaan. Marco Andretti also raced here in the ALMS.

Race Notes: Honda GP of St Petersburg 2009

Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg
Whitted Airport and city streets
St Petersburg, Florida, United States

Sky Sports Xtra live coverage is a GO at 7:30pm UK!

We're with Keith Huewen, Johnny Mowlem and Christopher Tate in London and we jump straight into a feature on Dan Wheldon in the sleepy village where he grew up.

Dan wants a good championship run "but the number one thing is the Indy 500, I want another Indy 500". He thinks Panther are in for a good year.

Do you realise you have a big fan base back in England watching you in America? "That's certainly appreciated. I do feel that America is home" but he enjoys having the England flag on his helmet.
My coverage keeps dying on me. I have IndyCar Race Control running at the same time, just as a backup, but they only have a helicam with no audio for the next 7 minutes.

*waits*

Message scrolling across the Race Control screen saying that all cars have been started.

7.46pm We're back with Sky.
They went green at the most ridiculous time of 7.48pm (UK). Something wrong with starting on the hour when people can find it easily?

I didn't see the start because all my coverage options have died on me.

* * * *
Note from the editor -At this point I lost all of the available online options. It is now Tuesday and I am reverting to a recording I'm borrowing. I will try to watch live again for Long Beach!

Take 2
We have Bob Jenkins, Jon Beekhuis and Robbie Buhl on commentary with pitlane reporters what's his face and Lindy Thackston, headed by the immortal King of Pitlane, Jack Arute himself.

We join with captions for a grid run-down over a helicam shot of St Pete, with audio from a feature running in the US. When the feature ends and after a chat with Dario we have Bob Jenkins saying hi to the international audience! Hi Bob! Shame we don't get the pictures of Dario or the feature but it's pretty cool having the same audio for everyone instead of a different international commentary feed.

Start order:

Rahal (pole), Wilson
Kanaan, Briscoe
Franchitti, Power
Tagliani, Dixon
Matos, Manning
Wheldon, Conway
Doornbos, Hunter-Reay
Patrick, Viso
Meira, Andretti
Mutoh, Moraes
Barrett, Carpenter

The president of Honda Performance Development shoehorns a Honda mention into the start command. Holy crap the race control radio of the rows reporting in is geeky cool! Row 3 hot! Like we're on an aircraft carrier.

First word from Jack Arute in the pits, talking about the black and red option tyres. Should I be saying 'tires' since we're in America now? Arute mentions 'pit central', I have no idea what that is, I might have to borrow the domestic feed.

Cars are rolling. Mike Conway is pronounced "My Conway" in America, or maybe just by Jenkins.

Cycling through the onboard cameras. Lovely nose-cam!

"One more time before the green flag". Fireworks!

Quick trip to the fridge: Cobra beer selected. This is the first IndyCar race of the year after two F1 races and an off-season watching recordings of GP2 and other European stuff, so I have to reset my brain to the IRL's quirky rules. More on this later.

Pundit guys disagree on which is better to start with: Blacks or Reds?
Cars side-by-side for the rolling start.

GREEN FLAG

Cars fan out WIDE. Bumping. Rahal got swamped! He's off the track, pushed off.
Conway is off already, looks like the pit exit.

SAFETY CAR despite the road being clear, only pit exit blocked, hmm don't agree with that one.
Replay: Kanaan punts Rahal off track, great nose-cam!

Conway is pushed back and restarted by the truck. Presumably the yellow is to allow the truck with the marshals to get to him. In the IRL they have guys on trucks as well as marshals at the corners, only the guys on the trucks are allowed to do anything.
In F1 the corner guys would jump over the wall and push Conway out of the way under local yellow. Requiring the truck to get him forces a yellow every time. IRL: just let the corner guys do it if it is safe to do so! But at least the IRL allows outside assistance, unlike F1.

Replay: Ooh Dario great move on the start! Several positions. I'm reminded how great the IRL's 360-degree cameras are and wonder why F1's cameras are static.

Jack Arute pit report says 'look over here' at Rahal's wing but we can't see him, we're onboard with Kanaan.

Lindy Thackston talks really quickly.

Matos exits the pits. I get a shock because he exits into the safety car queue which is a huge No-No elsewhere! Commentary mentions the blend line and I remember they can actually do that..

SPONSORED GREEN FLAG

Wilson leads, Dario 2nd
Kanaan passes Carpenter, TK at the back after a new nose. Rahal close by. Both clear Barrett.

We are on L5 of 100. Must remember the timing scroller shows current lap not most recent lap completed.

Jenkins talks about telemetry showing braking, accelerating on our screen - but it isn't. Any chance the international feed can get the juicy stuff?

L7 Now he's saying how we can see the red/black choices on the top of the screen. NO WE CAN'T!! We've got the standard ticker.
L8 Buhl notes the guys are swerving to avoid a huge bump before retaking the racing line for the next corner.

Short lap here of about a minute or so. This means my notes may have big jumps between laps, I haven't fallen asleep!
L11 I'm getting used to who is in what car. Conway is out with damage.
L13 Shock and horror as we cover the field! Nice!

Announcers still can't pronounce 'Doornbos' properly all the time. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. They make the good point that the A1GP car he is used to is just as fast over a lap but much lighter, which means it brakes later than these cars. Good job getting A1GP a mention when it doesn't even have a US TV deal.

L14 I think it's time I paid attention to who is on what tyre. We're onboard with Danica in 11th on reds.
L15 I'd do a race order but the ticker moves too quickly.
Wilson, Dario and two Penskes up front.

L19 Mutoh pits for blacks, he's the first stopper outside of those who called for damage earlier.

L21 We are lapping Barrett already after 15 green laps. Oh dear.
Viso pits to change from red to black.

So is Wilson in Bruno's old car? It does seem strange seeing Rahal in Wilson's car, but I suppose no different to seeing Justin in Sebastien's colours last season.

L22 Lindy says Wilson will pit on lap 28 or so.
Buhl says Dixon will be a few laps later than that.
L23 Manni, err, Meira pits.

L24 Wilson over Dario by 1.2s. There isn't much going on in terms of racing - this is already a strategy race based on tyre choice and fuel. Classic street race, then. There's a reason I prefer road courses to these.

L27 Moraes is holding up Kanaan and Rahal. Moraes is in Servia's car from last year and is 13th. I assume this is the closest fight on the road which is why we are watching it, this is much better than watching the top few drive away from each other!

L29 Apparently Moraes is up 7 positions since the start, although Jenkins fails to note how many cars stopped for damage. Beekhuis now makes that point, thanks Jon.
Rahal looks inside Kanaan but I think he's trying to spook him, he wouldn't have made it but he's showing his intentions. Kanaan needs to be sure to look at both Moraes AND Rahal.

L31 Jack Arute says pitstops are coming soon.
L32 An orange car went the wrong way. Tags?
Mario Moraes spins and someone has a damaged car. Raphael Matos. Heavy damage.

FULL COURSE CAUTION (I'm getting my US terminology back into gear!)

So Moraes is at turn 4, Matos turn 13 or so, now we have Danica walking away! We can't see her car or where she is. Replay time.

Danica passes Barrett and Matos is inside, ouch they both went hard into the wall.
Before that Meira tagged Tag which sent Alex off into the run-off area, he spun it around and continued.

L34 Guys say a Penske pitted before the yellow - Briscoe. Danica and Matos out of the cars together. I'd say his fault on the replays.

Replay: Moraes and Mutoh get together JUST avoided by Wilson!!

Danica and Raphael are talking about the crash.
One of the guys says it was a low-percentage pass, not much chance of it working.
Replay: Matos gets an overlap but he's not fully alongside when she had to turn in. He needed to back out. Buhl says she would've been way out in the marbles.

L36 Much pitting ensues.
Wilson from red to black.
Dixon had to be pushed back to his box, he overshot slightly and he's still too far away - he's too far from the wall! You don't want that on a yellow pitstop, sends you to the back, not good.

Replay: Aha, it was Power who overshot his pit box and Dixon had to go around him, putting Scott out of position. Not Dixon's fault.

L37 Briscoe leads after pitting before the safet.. caution period.
Road sweepers on track.

Positions after 36 laps completed:
Briscoe, Wheldon (!), Viso (!), RHR, Doornbos, Andretti, Wilson, Franchitti, Manning, Rahal, TK, Mutoh, Carpenter, Power, Meira, Dixon, Tags, Barrett.
Out: Patrick, Matos, Moraes, Conway.

I don't like this 'Americans get to see the stuff from previous years and we don't' business. Americans saw something from 2005.

Nice to hear Jenkins say VERSUS will be covering qualifying and the post-race for the Indy 500.

Very long yellow, IndyCar fans lose the right to bitch about F1.
Danica didn't seem too bad this time. Upset but not angry. Improvement.

L41 SPONSORED GREEN FLAG
Cars passing! Unfortunately everyone's changed paint jobs so I don't know who they are. Doornbos and someone.

Oh Dario has a great run on Doornbos, he's through. Wilson passes RHR and immediately looks at Viso but thinks better of it.

L42 VERSUS take the stupid decision to go to a break just a lap and a half after a green flag. Isn't that when most of the action is? Seems some things haven't changed from last year. The camera work and commentary team are a huge improvement though.

L45 Everyone has used reds for the mandatory 2 green laps, apart from Ed Carpenter.
Oriol Servia is with Arute. Oriol has no drive, he's hoping for one soon.

L46 Andretti pits for reds, off strategy.
Ernesto 'EJ' Viso is 3rd and Beekhuis says he had a bigger difference between red and black than any other driver in terms of balance of the car. It's nice to know it affects different teams/drivers in different ways.

I've just remembered about the silencer muffler things. I hadn't noticed earlier but the cars seem to have the same distinctive sound but a bit quieter. I think we'll notice it more on the flat-chat ovals.

L50 Half-distance, I like the IRL's crossed-flags idea. Furled green and chequered flags crossed. Not that the drivers can see what colours they are but it's for show really isn't it. I like it.

L52 Wilson passes Viso for 3rd! Makes Viso go the long way.

L54 Wilson opening a gap now. Barrett very slow as everyone laps him.
Half a lap later he's stopped and brings out the safety car.

FC YELLOW

He's in a dangerous position in the narrow twisty section at the back, on the outside of possibly a blind corner.

L55 Jon says now we get to watch people "dook it out".
Viso pits. Remains on blacks.
Power is in. Blacks. Briscoe the leader did not pit.
Most cars stayed out.

L56 SPONSORED GREEN FLAG
Much shorter yellow, that's better.
Wilson inside Wheldon, but no.
Helicam shot is useful to have for the airport section, not so good through the trees.

L57 Briscoe, Wheldon, Wilson, RHR, Franchitti, Rahal, TK, Manning, Doornbos, Mutoh, Dixon, Meira, Andretti, Carpenter, Viso, Power, Tags, Barrett etc

Not a bad top 10, switch Mutoh for Dixon and that's a very good top ten.

They've gone to break on a restart again but it's better than holding the race under yellow while they wait for ESPN/ABC to come back. The coverage should follow the race, not the race follow the coverage!

L60 Audio is of a montage of the race so far. Video is a rearward onboard from Wheldon. Hmm. I wonder if everyone outside the US is seeing what I'm seeing or if it just the feed I have here.

Wilson is still trying to work on Wheldon as Briscoe pulls away.

L62 Machine-gun Lindy says something about Panther.
L63 Beekhuis says as the track rubbers in the reds will work better. Same as F1's softer tyre then. America is looking 'the GoDaddy biggest movers' but we aren't.

We do now have a graphic showing fastest laps in "kph" which is American for "km/h". I have no idea why they don't show the much more useful lap times. Okay I'll own up: I'm being picky for the sake of it now because I'm still pissed at missing this live.

L66 Dixon pits. Black tyres. Viso pits for reds. How many times has Viso pitted? Seems like a lot.

L67 Power in for reds. Mutoh also pitted.
L68 Briscoe and Wheldon pit from 1st and 2nd! Blacks for Danny. And for Ryan.
TK also takes blacks.

I like how you can actually tell the difference between compounds with the huge bright red line on the inside, rather than a tiny dark green line on the edges.

L69 Wilson is behind Viso and laps him so a green flag pitstop costs nearly a lap on a street course which is insane! This isn't the Norisring! Justin needs to stop again.
Replay: Mutoh and Tags both pass Rahal into turn one.
L70 Dario pits for reds. Teams going different ways here. Rahal and Meira are in and Graham has blacks, he's out alongside Dixon!
Graham out on cold tyres is passed by Dixon and Manning as he gets up to speed.
L71 Wilson pits from the lead and takes more blacks. Where's he out? He beats Briscoe! Ryan is at speed on hot tyres though, now RIGHT up behind him!
L72 Nice driving to absorb that pressure Justin. Andretti pits from a brief lead.

FULL COURSE CAUTION

Ed Carpenter hit the wall.
We're told everybody already made their final stop - apart from Ed.
Jon says he may have hit the marbles from the softer tyres we're using this year. Softer tyres work well on street tracks and softer tyres make lots of marbles (just watch Monaco every year).

L75 Pit reports. Fact attack! Wilson is happy! Briscoe will do what Wilson does! Wheldon loves his car! RHR was only hired five days ago! How the frik does she speak that quickly?
We've slowed to just 2x normal speed with what's his name. Kanaan has made it up to 6th after dropping to last with that nose change. Lindy: Andretti can make it to the end. Viso has pitted after a pitstop problem earlier. He's still there.

Seems Andretti had trouble qualifying.

L77 Still yellow. I'm not sure what the hold-up is.
Arute thinks Coyne vs Penske is great and that they'll fight to the finish.
Lindy with Viso: "Failure with the car, steering or something. It was a big risk to stay on the track for me and for everyone."
Jenkins says the first time he saw Viso was at the mini-marathon at Indy last May, the first time he saw the Speedway was when he ran around it.

L78 SPONSORED GREEN FLAG
Dario is in trouble, he got too wide on to the marbles and lost 2 or 3 places. It looks like Wheldon lost out more though as Dario is still ahead of him.
Looking at the ticker and it looks like Barrett got running again 4 laps down.

RHR taking a look for 2nd! Not quite. Doornbos inside Mutoh, Dixon on Andretti.
Passing on an IndyCar street track!

L79 Replays. Wheldon got well wide, RHR holds up Dario which slowed him and Kanaan finds his way past both to slot in behind RHR.

L81 Dario re-takes TK! Commentary suggests Dario's reds have more grip than TK's blacks. Someone in the wall. Dixon!! I'd seen the race winner result before this but I had no idea Dixon went out!

Same place as Carpenter's crash. Replays: Scott inside Mutoh and pushes Hideki wide and breaks something on the left front, which sends him off at the next corner. LOVING the multiple replays!

FC CAUTION

L83 Lindy with Dale Coyne: "He's been the fastest car all day, we were able to go 2 laps longer, really good. We've still got 16 laps to go we want that last lap."

Long yellow to fix the tyre wall Dixon went into which is fair enough. Safety first.

L87 GREEN FLAG
Briscoe passes Wilson into turn one!
RHR is on Justin's ass. Doornbos passes Wheldon and hits him hard! Mutoh runs in to Dan. Andretti touched one of them quickly.

CAUTION
Wheldon and Mutoh exit their cars. Doornbos is making his way back to the pits with damaged suspension. Andretti has damage too.

Replays:
Doornbos was on the inside of Wheldon. Rahal was inside Mutoh a row behind which led him to hit Wheldon. Onboard Wheldon: Dan was doing what he could but ran out of room.

L89 order: Briscoe, RHR, Wilson, Dario, TK, Power, Rahal, Meira, Manning, Andretti, Tags, Wheldon, Doornbos, Mutoh, Barrett, Dixon, etc.

Arute says RHR's car prefers the red tyres and they've been on them all day save for a short stint on blacks to fulfil their obligation to use both sets.

L91 Highlights of the Lights race on American screens but not ours. Jenkins said to look away if you don't want to know the result because they're showing it tomorrow - guess which network will have received a ton of complaints about it by now! Whenever ITV spoiled the GP2 results in their F1 coverage before they aired it a week later they always got complaints, yet they still did it.

L93 GREEN FLAG
RHR looks inside Briscoe but can't make it.

L94 Twelve cars still running and Barrett is the 12th! Andretti is still running albeit a lap down so there wasn't too much damage for him.

Robbie Floyd (ta for telling us his name now) with Dixon: "We had someone park in our pit which pretty much ruined us. Tough day, we had to always outbrake into one and we couldn't get the car slowed down quick enough. Front wishbone was broken and it went straight ahead."

L95 Tagliani hits Andretti and spins him around.
Marco tries to turn around and gets stuck.

L96 CAUTION
Jon says Alex is too non-committal on that move, his fault. Andretti is pulled back and gets out of the car.

L98 RESTART
Single file through turn one, field looking pretty thin.

L99 WHITE FLAG
Dario takes a look at Wilson but he's way too far back.

CHEQUERED FLAG - Briscoe wins!

Robbie Floyd with Roger Penske: "This one's for Helio. Will did a great job, what a job Briscoe did there. Hunter-Reay did a hell of a job."

Jenkins: "Penske's 30th win in the IndyCar Series at the hands of Ryan Briscoe." Um, no. This wasn't Penske's 30th win with Briscoe and he's had a hell of a lot more in Indycar racing generally.
Cars roll back into pitlane on the cool-down lap.

Briscoe out of the car with Jack Arute: "This place has been bad to me, it feels good to get to the end of this race. Amazing strategy." He does what Roger Penske tells him to do. Congrats to Wilson who was very fair. There's some crazy mascot behind him which has a bird's head with a visor.

My feed just stopped here so I think we're done.

RESULTS
1. Briscoe - 100 laps
2. Hunter-Reay
3. Wilson
4. Franchitti
5. Kanaan
6. Power
7. Rahal
8. Manning
9. Meira
10. Tagliani
11. Doornbos
12. Barrett (Doornbos got him at the end??)

DNFs:
Andretti, Wheldon, Mutoh, Dixon, Viso, Carpenter, Patrick, Matos, Moraes, Conway

The next IndyCar race is the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 19th, the same day as the Chinese GP so another double-header weekend!

I'm looking forward to Long Beach which will be the first visit by this series but not for many of the teams or drivers. It should be a good race now we've "ChampCarified" the series with these reds and blacks. Hopefully there will be fewer snoozefests on the twisties this year, plus LB is a good street track with some wide open sections to build up some speed.

The better news? I've checked and I was completely wrong in my previous post - it looks like a 9pm start time over here, which is perfect!

Be sure to check out the race notes from my North American blogger friends on what sounds like a fantastic domestic VERSUS feed:
Pressdog, MyNameIsIRL & Meesh

These three were the inspiration for my note-taking so check 'em out RIGHT NOW! That's an order!
I'm off to give my typing hands a rest because I swear I've never typed so fast in my life before.
